The 31st edition of Indian Carpet Expo, organised by Carpet Export Promotion Council(CEPC), ended on Monday after having showcased Indian weaving skills amongst overseas carpet buyers. The four-day expo that was inaugurated by Union Textiles Minister, Santosh Kumar Gangwar, on March 11, 2016 at NSIC Exhibition Complex, Okhla Industrial Estate, New Delhi, showcased products from 270 reputed small, medium and large manufacturer exporters across the country. The Expo is said to have generated over Rs 260-300 crore of business mainly from 410 foreign carpet buyers from 58 nations, according to CEPC. “Expo will lead to opening up of new market opportunity for the industry and will help small and medium Indian carpet exporters in promoting their products in overseas countries. This ongoing process, on a broader scale, is instrumental in projecting the ‘Make in India’ brand in foreign markets,” said Kuldeep R Wattal, Chairman, CEPC. Kuldeep further informed that the government is aiming at an export target of Rs.10,000 crore for floor coverings and carpets for the fiscal year 2015-2016. A growth rate of about 10% to 15% in dollar terms and 15% to 20% in rupee terms is expected this year, he added. Speaking on the inaugural event, Santosh Kumar Gangwar had expressed satisfaction over Indian handmade carpet industry growing at 17% per annum, despite a weak global market. Appreciating the efforts of manufacturers and artisans, he assured government’s support to the carpet industry and its export efforts in every possible way. “The Expo is part of the Council's endeavor to provide a friendly business environment to both carpet importers and manufacturer-exporters, which will ultimately benefit about 2 million weavers and artisans employed in this labour intensive industry,” said a Ministry of Textiles release. According to the release, India Carpet Expo 2016, for the first time, has witnessed a participation of 58 countries with buyers from countries like Bulgaria, Palestine, Zimbabwe, Egypt, Vietnam, Israel, Ukraine, Poland, Taiwan, Malaysia, Colombia, Mauritius with Serbia, and Hungary being the newest participants this time.
