Labour and Employment Ministry, in association with Department of Financial Services, Ministry of Finance, is going to launch a country-wide campaign to open bank accounts for those workers in organised as well as unorganised sectors who do not have any bank account so far.
Special camps will be organised in each district at a certain location to facilitate workers to open the bank accounts, starting from November 26 2016. The government has taken a decision to vigorously pursue this route of digital transactions.
“We have already sent communications to all the state governments in this respect requesting their active cooperation,” stated Bandaru Dattatreya, Minister of State (IC) for Labour and Employment on Friday.
Dattatreya said that the team consisting of district magistrates (DMs), labour officers of centre and state governments and lead district manager of banks would take the decision on the camps’ modalities including coordination with banking channels and sites within their districts.
The Minister has asked all the employers, establishments, employees associations and other associated people seeking their active participation and cooperation to make sure that the workers who are in need are facilitated to reach the camps and get the services therein.
For facilitating financial inclusion and ensuring transparency in all the transactions with regard to financial matters, the government has launched its flagship programme of Jan Dhan Yojna in the month of September, 2014. Under the scheme, 25 crore accounts have been opened across the country since then, thus linking the working populace to the mainstream financial and banking activities. Through this vast banking network, the Direct Benefit Scheme (DBT) has benefitted millions of poor citizens of India
