The Commerce and Industry Ministry wants states to come up with their own IPR policies in order to promote innovation and give a boost to the economy. The Union Ministry wants the States to help in creating awareness and enhance the new IPR policy. The CIM had convened a meeting with industry associations on Tuesday seeking their views and suggestions on the National IPR Policy

A CIM official remarked that a good suggestion was made during the interactive session, which would be shared with the States so that they come up with their own IPR policy kind of document. "We will suggest state governments to consider this and prepare their own IPR policy kind of document," the official said. The DIPP, under the commerce and industry ministry, regulates IPR related matters, among others.

Delving more into the benefits of a good IPR policy, the official of the CIM said that IPR policies would help in incentivising IPR filing, help in getting funds for R&D activities, enhance creativity, promote innovation and help in boosting a state’s economy.

The ministry wants the States to help translate the IPR policy into several of its States languages. Addressing the industry associations, DIPP Secretary, Ramesh Abhishek, announced that,  “a nation-wide awareness campaign on IPR will be launched by the DIPP. It will be taken forward by Cell for IPR Promotion and Management (CIPAM) in collaboration with Office of the Controller General of Patents, Designs and Trademarks (CGPDTM) and industry associations.”

A roadshow was carried out in 18 states to gauge and engage the public in its mission. The DIPP intends to carry out 3,500 such roadshows by 2020.

Remarking on the importance and necessity of IPR in India, Abhishek said, “in the recent decades, the pace of innovation in the country was not impressive, and as India is looking to be USD 10-20 trillion economy in the future, it is important to promote innovation and creativity.”
