A new green channel ‘Make in India’ seeks permission for single day cargo clearance

A new green channel, Make in India, seeks permission for 'warehouse to wharf ' shipment in a day for any made in India product, in order to give a boost to domestic manufacturing and exports.

According to official sources, the time for cargo clearance will lessen down from a week to a few hours, under the new facility which will be started at certain ports in a month.

A new platform that is being created will help the companies to get information about when to transport goods from warehouses or factories, so that they do not have to waste time at the ports.

The Single Window Interface for Facilitating Trade or the SWIFT system, started in April by the CBEC (Central Board of Excise and Customs), provides exporters and importers to submit only one clearance form at ports from all agencies comprising the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), Drug Controller General of India, Plant Quarantine, Wildlife Crime Control Bureau.

At customs, the SWIFT system provides for risk-based calculation. It significantly lessens down the procedures of paperwork but not the period of waiting of 6-7 days. However, the new channel seeks to solve this issue.

The government of India under PM Narendra Modi started the ‘Make in India’ programme to boost local manufacturing. The initiative is also been considered as the major vehicle to attract foreign investment in the country.
