The Gangavaram Port created a milestone by discharging a record 1,12,599 Metric Tons (MT) of steam coal in 24 hours from its ultra large cargo vessel M V Cape Jupiter. “This record discharge rate only reaffirms the superior port infrastructure and operational efficiency at Gangavaram Port,” the operator said in a statement on Monday. “With the commissioning of the second and new mechanized coal handling terminal and 3 other general cargo berths, the port infrastructure at the Gangavaram Port has become un-paralleled with a capacity of about 64MMTPA,” said Raj Dandu, Executive Director, Gangavaram Port Limited. The all-weather port which is capable of handling capesize vessels is submerged up to 21-metre in to the sea. The port, operational since 2009, has been offering services to Indian exporters and importers through deep draft berths, advanced material handling and evacuation system and vast storage areas for all types of cargo and extensive ancillary facilities. In 2012, Krishnapatnam Port had created a record in the maritime world by discharging 1,22,247 MTs of coal in just 24 hrs. Besides, Jaigarh Port, a subsidiary of JSW Infrastructure Ltd, in Damankhol Bay, Ratnagiri district of Maharashtra, had also set an all-India record by discharging 71,740 MT of steam coal in the first 24 hours from Panamax vessel MV Marina.
