Govt to set up skill training centres to push ‘Make in India’
As part of efforts to enhance domestic manufacturing, the government will set up centres for excellence across the country to ensure skill development in various sectors including capital goods and automotive. The Department of Heavy Industries (DHI) and the Ministry of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship on Tuesday signed an agreement for this purpose. The MoU is meant for creating a national ecosystem for development of skills for the manufacturing sector, in particular the capital goods sector and automotive sector and other sectors/subjects covered by DHI, a government statement said on Wednesday. “We are aiming to create direct and indirect employment for 30 million workers in the capital goods sector by 2025. Hence, we have signed the MoU with Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship to ensure that these targets are met,” said Anant Geete, Union Minister for Heavy Industries. As part of the agreement, the government will also develop a multi-location National Institute of Manufacturing Technology (NIMT) for training, education and research in manufacturing technologies by leveraging the infrastructure and facilities of PSUs under DHI. India’s capital goods sector provides employment to about 1.4 million people directly and another 7 million indirectly. The government has also prepared a draft national policy on capital goods, which is likely to be sent for cabinet’s approval. “Availability of talent and productivity of the workforce are amongst the top drivers for manufacturing competitiveness of a nation. The central government is committed to ensure that there is adequate supply of quality talent for the manufacturing sector. This would give India a competitive edge in manufacturing.” said Rajiv Pratap Rudy, Union Minister of State Skill Development and Entrepreneurship. The MoU was signed during the World of Industry India (WIN) conference organised by the DHI along with industry body FICCI and Hannover Milano Fairs India Pvt Ltd, the Indian subsidiary of Deutsche Messe. A business delegation from Germany is also visiting the WIN India—an industrial and engineering trade fair being held in New Delhi from December 9-11. Daniela Behrens, State Secretary of Germany’s Lower Saxony, is leading the delegation with an aim to meet Indian companies and intensifying Lower Saxony’s economic relations with India.
