The government on Thursday announced it is currently working on facilitating cashless transfer of wages to workers with an aim to encourage
digital transactions in the country.
The MoS for Labour & Employment, Bandaru Dattatreya, said the ministry has already taken several initiatives to support measures taken towards this objective.
On November 26, the government launched a campaign for opening bank accounts for workers in the unorganised sector like beedi, construction, Anganwadi and daily wage labourers who still do not possess bank accounts.
“The objective of the campaign is to ensure that all workers come into the banking fold and their wages are paid directly into their account. This will not only prevent exploitation of workers and payment of wages without cut but will also inculcate the habit of using cashless transactions,” Dattatreya said.
The Ministry, in association with several departments of the banking, finance ministries and the district administration has been organising camps for opening bank accounts through its field offices like ESIC, EPFO and Labour offices.
Dattatreya announced that a total of 15,134 camps were set up in the country till November. Of the total, EPFO held 2324, ESIC held 2878 and CLC held 9284 Camps.
“As a result of this campaign by the Ministry of Labour and Employment, 3,87,037 bank accounts have been opened all over India,” a ministry statement said.
According to the data received from the Finance Ministry, over nine lakh accounts have been opened as on November 29.
About 25.68 crore
Jan Dhan accounts were existing till date, while the administration was in the process of opening the accounts of the left over workers.
For further facilitation and strengthening the distribution network for cashless transactions, Bandaru Dattatreya also urged the finance ministry to provide the facility of mobile ATM-cum-cash dispensing vans all over the country, especially in the unorganised sector.
The Ministry is also in continuous communications with the State government for opening new bank accounts. He urged the trade unions to contribute in this campaign and extend their cooperation.
