Handicraft exports up 3% in first three quarters of 2015-16

The Ministry of Textiles has taken several initiatives to promote textile industry in the global markets and increase exports of handicrafts from the country

India’s handicraft exports have grown by 3% to $2,282 million during April-December 2015 from $2,215 million during April-December 2014. “The exports of handicrafts have grown by 10% in rupee terms, from Rs.13,460 crore during April-December 2014 to Rs.14,782 crore during April-December 2015,” Ministry of Textiles said in a statement on Friday. Under the e-commerce policy framework for promotion of online marketing of handloom products, the Ministry of Textiles has engaged three e-commerce entities i.e. Mumbai-based Craftsvilla Handicrafts Pvt. Ltd., Bangalore-based Pegarse Technologies Pvt. Ltd., Bangalore and Gocoop Solution & Services Pvt. Ltd. in January 2015. These will operate in Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Rajasthan. The government has also created a policy framework under Brand India Handloom Partnership Framework to enter into partnership with leading handloom retail stores. As part of this framework, handloom retail stores will partner with the Office of Development Commissioner (Handlooms), Ministry of Textiles in selling Indian handloom brand products. The ministry has shortlisted 13 retail stores across 10 cities. The Indian textile industry has been organising several events to promote handicraft products and showcase the rich heritage of India. Last month, the Central Cottage Industries Corporation of India (CCIC) had organised an exhibition-cum-sale of exclusive handcrafted creations at Janpath in New Delhi. “The highlight of the exhibition was the launch of “COTTAGE PREMIUM”- an exquisite collection of highly exclusive and very limited collection of handicraft and handloom products for the connoisseur of crafts,” the statement said. In addition, the 56th India International Garment Fair was held from January 20 – 22, 2016 at Pragati Maidan in New Delhi. Around 807 foreign buyers and 720 buying agencies participated in the fair.
