After India’s polar satellite launch vehicle (PSLV) launched a record 104 satellites in a single mission last week, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) on Monday said India has the ability to create a space station, but it needs to have long-term planning and necessary funds.

ISRO Chairman A S Kiran Kumar on Monday said: "We have all the capabilities to set up a space station. The day the country takes the decision, we will 'ok' the project. Just draw a policy and provide us necessary funds and time.

He was speaking in Indore at the foundation day ceremony of Raja Ramanna Center for Advanced Technology (RRCAT).

"We still talk about what would be the immediate benefits of a manned space mission. That is why the country hasn't made up its mind about when to invest in a space station," Kumar said.

He also indicated a possibility of partnering with the private sector industry to enhance India’s satellite launching capability.

India needs more satellites to monitor the weather and land conditions and to improve its communication services.

“This is possible with an increase in the number of satellite launches, for which the country needs to enhance the basic infrastructure and reduce the cost of equipment,” Kumar added.

Many companies across the world are involved in manufacturing small satellites, but they have not been able to launch them. This sector has a vast commercial potential, and India can make the most of it by better development of launch facilities.
