India exports metro coaches to Australia
The government has shipped a batch of six metro coaches to Australia as part of a deal to export 450 made-in-India coaches in two and a half year period. The maiden consignment of six metro coaches built in Baroda manufacturing plant was shipped from Mumbai Port recently. “This is the first shipment of the planned 450 coaches that will be exported to Australia over two and half year period,” Shipping Ministry said in a statement on Friday. The coaches are 75 feet long and weigh 46 tonnes each. The Mumbai Port Trust has carried out the entire stevedoring operation (loading into ship) of these oversized metro coaches without any help from private operators. “Mumbai Port holds supremacy in handling of oversized precious cargo,” the statement added. The Mumbai Port Trust is also building a passenger jetty at Kanhoji Angre Island to facilitate movement of tourists at the island. Minister for Shipping and Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari had recently laid the foundation stone for construction of a passenger jetty at Kanhoji Angre Island. The proposed facility worth Rs.16 crore is part of the project for development of Kanhoji Angre Island as a tourist destination. “The jetty being constructed by the port will facilitate smooth berthing of passenger boats and embarkation/ disembarkation of passengers at the island,” the ministry said.
