India, UK to sign an MoU in transport sector

India and the UK on Friday decided to sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in urban transport sector to cooperate in policy planning, institutional organisation and technology transfer. 

India’s Road Transport, Highways and Shipping Minister Nitin Gadkari, who is on a 3-day visit to the UK, concluded the bilateral cooperation agreement between the Transport for London (TfL) and India’s Road Transport and Highways Ministry, which would cover a broad range of solutions in transport mobility and related activities in urban settings.

“The signing of the MoU will be completed through diplomatic channels shortly,” Gadkari said. 

During his visit to the TfL headquarters in London, a presentation was given to Gadkari on strategy & policy reforms, experience of customers and data analysis related to buses in London and other integrated public transport modes in the area of Greater London. 

The TfL, under the proposed pact, will share with the Road Transport and Highways Ministry of India its expertise on the efficiency and mobility of transportation system and methodology to ease the delivery and planning of mobility solutions that include passenger information, ticketing, infrastructure maintenance strategies and behavioural change, major project financing and public transport promotion. 

Indian Ministry is expecting to bolster collaboration on electric buses, innovation and capacity augmentation in buses and water transport after the meeting with the authorities of TfL. 

The TfL claims to offer world-class services, which keeps UK’s capital well-equipped with public transport. In addition, it virtually manages all the transport in the city, including the bus network, London metro, water transport, Dockland Light Rail, cable car etc.
