Indian industry welcomes the entry of India to the MTCR (Missile Technology Control Regime) and hopes that the US will do the heavy lifting to push for the country’s membership at the NSG (Nuclear Suppliers Group) that has to be decided later this month, FICCI said in a statement.

“FICCI welcomes the historical meet between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Barack Obama in Washington DC and the operationalisation of the Indo-US Civil Nuclear Agreement,” the industry body said in the statement.

The statement further said that India, already, looks set to become a member of the MTCR regime and is now looking for support to become a member at the Wassenaar Arrangement and Australia Group.

FICCI also said it will support the India-US partnership in high technology in crucial areas and will allow high value technology enabled trade for projects under ‘Make in India’ initiative. This will also open up prospects for similar cooperation with nations such as France, it added.

In this direction, it is also admirable to get support from Switzerland and Mexico for India’s entry to NSG. Regardless of what may be the end-result in terms of membership at NSG, it is certain that India’s bilateral ties with these countries would reach new heights, FCCI said.

Dr. Didar Singh, Secretary General, FICCI, stated, “The industry is set to meet the international regulations and licensing rules to make sure that technology acquisition, manufacturing and trade of double-use products will not be re-exported or diverted for illegal use.”

Indian industry is willing to work as per Internal Compliance Programme (ICP) and global best practices to maintain the country’s non-proliferation record, Singh added.

FICCI is working with Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) and the Disarmament & International Security Affairs (DISA) Division of the External Affairs Ministry on several industry programmes. These programmes are aimed to improve the knowledge on the risk of cutting-edge technology products for use in weapons, and take suitable counter-measures to ensure supply chain security.
