Railways carried 532.44 million tonnes of commodity-wise freight traffic in the first six months of FY2014-15, which is up about 4.2% from 511 million tonnes carried during the corresponding period last year, and around 48% of the targeted 1,101 million tonnes for the full year FY2014-15, according to the Ministry of Railways. Commodity-wise freight revenue earnings during April-September 2014 stood at Rs.48,062.07 crore (about $7.8 billion), up 10.59% from Rs.43,457.78 crore (about $7.2 billion) earned during the corresponding period last year. Earnings during the month of September 2014 stood at Rs.7,703.85 crore, which is up around 10.18% from Rs.6,992.18 crore earned during the same period last year. About 46% of it came from transport of coal, said India’s Ministry of Railways. The Ministry is targeting total freight loading of 1,101 million tonnes in FY2014-15, which is up about 4.8% from 1,050 million tonnes in FY2013-14. Total freight earnings targeted in FY2014-15 is Rs.1,05,770 crore. It is estimated that Indian Railways runs more than 7,000 freight trains every day which handle around 32% of total freight in India.
