Indias jute exports at Rs 11 cr mark to go up-Textile Minister The Minister of State for Textiles (Independent Charge), Santosh Kumar Gangwar addressing at the foundation stone laying ceremony of the “Patsan Bhavan”, at Rajarhat, New Town in Kolkata on Tuesday.

The government seems to be keen to promote the manufacturing of jute products and increase exports by diversifying the product portfolio. India exported jute products worth Rs.11 crore during last year and the figure is expected to go up this year, said Union Minister of Textiles Santosh Kumar Gangwar on Tuesday. The minister asked jute-growing states to find out ways and means to utilise the prospect of the golden fibre to the fullest. “Jute production in the country is good as a price higher than Minimum Support Price (MSP) is available to the jute farmers and the export in current year would go up above Rs.11 crore in the previous year, both in terms of volume and worth,” Gangwar said after unveiling the foundation stone of Patsan Bhawan – a proposed complex meant for four offices of the jute sector—in Kolkata on Tuesday. The new building to be constructed with an investment of Rs.70 crore will accommodate the Jute Corporation of India, National Jute Manufacturers Corporation, National Jute Board, and Office of the Jute Commissioner. The project is expected to be completed in two years. The minister also inaugurated an exhibition of diversified jute products which included jute bags, sandals, folders, jute carpet, hammocks, apparels and many other decorative items. To promote the manufacturing and sales of various jute handicraft units, the minister launched five Common Facility Centres (CFCs) in West Bengal, Assam and Bihar and also assured of setting up more such facilities across the country. The CFCs, to be run under a ministry-designed Rs.10 crore scheme, will provide financial help, training, inputs and marketing assistance to women-driven self-help groups engaged in the jute sector.
