Japan’s ICT major for 'Safe City' projects in AP

Under the agreement, NEC will work in collaboration with APTS in designing and implementing at Tirupati, a Safe City Project, which is focused at making the city more secure and safer for its citizens through technological innovations

Japan-based Information Technology services major NEC Corporation entered into an agreement with the Andhra Pradesh Technology Services Limited (APTS), for smart city projects in the State. NEC India and APTS, a wholly-owned state company of Andhra Pradesh IT, electronics and communications service provider of AP, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for collaboration in the areas of information technology for 'smart city' initiatives in the State, said NEC Corp, in its official release on Tuesday. A MoU in this regard was signed in the presence of Yosuke Takagi, State Minister of Economy, Trade & Industry, Japan and N Chandrababu Naidu, AP CM, at an official ceremony in Japan. Under the agreement, NEC will work in collaboration with APTS in designing and implementing at Tirupati, a 'Safe City Project', which is focused at making the city more secure and safer for its citizens through technological innovations. The NEC-APTS collaboration, besides a 'Safe City' project, is also aimed at creating an investor-friendly environment by providing leading solutions and technologies, including facial recognition systems and automated fingerprint identification systems. As a part of the Safe City Project at Tirupati, both the sides have also agreed to address issues relating to cyber security, smart transportation for the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) sector in order to improve operational efficiency and increase passenger satisfaction by utilizing the latest Information and Communication Technology (ICT) solutions. Besides, the Japanese major will also study the feasibilities of establishing a Centre of Excellence and a Development Centre (DC) which could assist with research and developmental activities, capacity building and offer consulting on a wide variety of technological projects. “We are confident that NEC's technological capabilities, global experience and local understanding, in partnership with APTS, will bring new value to the safe city projects in Andhra Pradesh,” said Koichiro Koide, Managing Director, NEC India, while expressing satisfaction over the project. Leveraging the experience of this project, NEC is keen on providing similar services in regards to developing smart and safe city projects across India. The NEC is said to be in talks with the other State governments like Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Telangana, among others, for similar safe city projects.
