India’s construction giant Larsen & Toubro on Tuesday said that it has won a railway contract worth $161.37 million (Rs.1070 crore) in Saudi Arabia. As part of the project, L&T will build 62.86 kms of double ballastless tracks under tunnel in Riyadh—the capital city of Saudi Arabia. The project is expected to be completed within 40 months. “The order has been won against stiff international competition and is in sync with L&T’s strategy to expand their railway business into the Middle-East,” the company said in a statement. The 75-year-old multinational company has won the order from BACS association (Bachtel-Almabani-CCC-Siemens) to design and build ballastless tracks for Riyadh Metro Lines -1&2. The latest announcement comes a day after L&T construction’s water & Effluent Treatment Strategic Business Group won a turnkey order worth Rs.1489 crore from Pubic Health Engineer Department in Ajmer, Rajasthan. The project is funded by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), which aims to provide portable water to 986 villages and 7 towns in Nagaur, and 111 villages and 2 towns in Bikaner. “The scope of the package includes the construction of a 5310 ML raw water reservoir, a 250 MLD water treatment plant, raw water and clean water pumping stations, mile steel and ductile iron pipelines, electro-mechanical and instrumentation and other allied works including operation and maintenance,” the company said in a statement on August 31.
