PM lays stone for NTPC’s power plant in Telangana

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday laid the foundation stone for the Phase I of NTPC's Rs. 10598.98 crore Telangana Super Thermal Power Project (STPP) in Ramagundam city in the Karimnagar district of Telangana.

Speaking at the event, Modi said that Telangana is only a two-year-old state, but still it has been able to fulfill the people’s expectations.”

“Whenever the Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao has a meeting with me, he has talked about the development of the state and its issues related to water,” he said.

Modi stressed on the need for cooperative federalism and said, “There was a time when dialogue between Centre and states was quite tense but now, both work together for development.”

NTPC (National Thermal Power Corporation) will build the project in two phases, in first phase 1600 MW (2x800MW) and in the second phase 2400 MW (3x800 MW).

The project is being established on the land available in the NTPC's premises of Ramagundam station. An approval of Rs.10598.98 crore investment has been given for the project.

It has been mandated by the AP Reorganisation Act 2014 that NTPC shall set up a power plant of 4000 MW for the newly created state of Telangana.

For the Telangana STPP, Coal Ministry had allocated Mandakini-B coal mine in the state of Odisha to NTPC, last year. As a temporary arrangement till the Mandakini-B mine is developed, tapering coal link for Phase-I of the project shall be provided from Western Coalfields Limited (WCL).

Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao, Telangana Governor ESL Narasimhan, Labour Minister Bandaru Dattatreya, Power Minster Piyush Goyal, Telangana Energy Minister G Jagadish Reddy and NTPC's chairman and MD Gurdeep Singh were also present at the event.
