Singapore-based diversified company Sembcorp and Hyderabad-based infrastructure company Gayatri power, which has already 2,640 MW thermal projects at Krishnapatnam in Andhra Pradesh, are planning to double the power generation capacity with an investment of around Rs.12,000 crore. Sandeep Kumar Reddy, Managing Director of Gayatri Projects, feels that there is a possibility to invest Rs.10,000 to Rs.12,000 crore to double the power capacity in the next five years as they have sufficient land. For a while, the existing land-thermal power complex in Andhra Pradesh of almost 2,600 acres is enough for development. The process has started to consider doubling the power generation capacity that will take the capacity to 5280MW. They have invested around Rs.20,000 crore on this expansion plan. Sembcorp and Gayatri have finished the first project of 1320 MW almost five months ago, supplying power to the Southern States. The first phase of the 2,640 MW was inaugurated last month while the second phase was planned to be inaugurated by September 2016. Sembcorp Gayatri Power Complex has two power plants with a capacity of 2,640 MW, in which the Singapore-based company Sembcorp holds 70% in both power plants, while the remaining is held by Gayatri. The demand for power may increase in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and other Southern States. Apart from this, many irrigation projects have also been scheduled in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Power in Telengana may not look bleak after all. The Thermal Powertech Corporation India Ltd (TPCIL) has protected up to 85% of its net total generating capacity under long-term power purchase agreement, 570 MW agreements with Telangana power distribution companies and 500 MW deal with Andhra Pradesh and Telangana power distribution companies.
