Suu Kyi to pay a 3-day state visit to India

The leader of the National League for Democracy of Myanmar, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, will be visiting India on October 16 during a four-day tour which will also be marked by attending the BRICS-BIMSTEC Outreach Summit in Goa. She assumed her duties as the country’s foreign minister in March this year.

Suu Kyi is expected to take up key bilateral and regional issues with Narendra Modi who has invited her for a state visit from October 17-19, 2016. She will head for the visit right after the completion of the BRICS-BIMSTEC Outreach Summit on October 16.

Suu Kyi’s state visit will pave way for discussions of mutual interests to consolidate the already strong ties existing between the two nations, according to a statement issued by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).

The scheduled bilateral meeting will revolve around issues relating to border management with a focus on measures to curb militant activities along the Indo-Myanmar border. The discussion will also shed light on ways to strengthen trade ties between the two countries.

The meeting is significant in the backdrop of the earlier visit of Myanmar President U Htin Kyaw who had assured the Indian government of not letting any terrorist group to use its territory for initiating any attacks on India.

Suu Kyi, who will be heading the Myanmar delegation to the Brics summit, will also be meeting President Pranab Mukherjee and External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj during her state visit. Her agenda will include attending a business event to interact with the leading Indian business heads to bolster bilateral economic and commercial relations. 

Suu Kyi’s party the National League for Democracy is one of the most influential parties in Myanmar's pro-democracy movement and is responsible for ending the military rule spanning five decades.
