Civil Aviation Policy envisages growth of cargo volumes to 10 mn tonnes by 2027

The Dollar Business Bureau The National Civil Aviation Policy, 2016 has envisaged growth of cargo volumes to 10 million tonnes by 2027. As per data maintained by the Airports Authority of India (AAI), air freight handled at Indian airports grew by more than 20 times from 0.08 million metric tonnes in 1972-73 to 2.5 million metric tonnes in 2014-15, and its compound annual growth rate (CAGR) was 8.8% during 2013-14 to 2016-17. 18% GST on international freight to make air-cargo non-competitive: PHDCCI

The Dollar Business Bureau Imposing Goods and Services Tax (GST) on international freight is going to make India’s air cargo services "non-competitive", said industry body PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PHDCCI) on Wednesday. Earlier, under service tax regime, freighters were exempted to pay any tax, whereas now they have been levied with 18% GST. “Putting 18% GST on international freight is totally unfair as this will impact the air cargo growth, said PHDCCI in a statement issued after an Air Cargo Summit, which is organised by the industry body on Wednesday in New Delhi. “Why would the Government of India want Indian exporters to pay extra 18% GST on freight and make our goods non-competitive in international market,” the statement said. Trichy Airport opens dedicated terminal for import cargo

Sneha Gilada The Trichy International Airport now has a new import cargo processing unit, spread over 150 square metres, catering to three different operations of storage, examination and delivery.  The new establishment meant to deal exclusively with imported cargo dispatched in foreign aircraft, is in close proximity to the export freight terminal, with a ramp connecting the two.  This development also brings to light the disparity between the amount of import and export cargo handled by the airport. Reportedly, throughout FY2016-17, only 50 tonnes of imports were handled at this airport while the amount of export cargo went beyond 6,900 tonnes, bringing the total annual cargo to 6965 tonnes.
