FDI in manufacturing of tobacco products prohibited: RBI
Source: PTI Reserve Bank has said that Foreign Direct Investment in manufacturing of tobacco products is prohibited, though activities such as retail and wholesale trading fall under the sectoral restrictions. In a notification issued on Friday, RBI said Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) is prohibited in the manufacturing of cigars, cheroots, cigarillos and cigarettes, of tobacco or of tobacco substitutes. It further clarified that the prohibition applies only to manufacturing of the products mentioned therein and foreign direct investment in other activities relating to these products including wholesale cash and carry, retail trading shall be governed by the sectoral restrictions laid down in the FDI policy. Further boost to defence manufacturing, DIPP clears defence licenses worth Rs 613 cr
Source: PIB, Government of India The Department of Industrial Policy & Promotion (DIPP) has been in the vanguard for undertaking major reforms to promote defence manufacturing under 'Make in India' initiative. Continuing with the momentum created, it has so far issued 73 industrial licenses in defence sector during last one year (since June 2014), against 50 licenses granted during 2011 to May 2014. These include 16 proposals with proposed investment of Rs. 613 crores, cleared in recent Licensing Committee meeting chaired by Secretary, DIPP, held on June 10, 2015. The Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, today gave its approval for signing of a Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) between the Department of Industrial Policy & Promotion (DIPP) and the Japan Patent Office (JPO), Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, Japan. The purpose of MoC is to establish a framework for bilateral cooperation in the field of Industrial Property (IP), with emphasis on capacity building, human resource development and awareness generation.
