Spices Board urges exporters to use GI details

The Dollar Business Bureau  In order to make sure the authenticity of Indian spices, the Spices Board is taking deliberate steps to provide them with the status of Geographical Indication (GI). The board is requesting the exporters to mention the GI tag before shipping the spices to prevent international exporters from taking advantage of the ‘Indian Spices’ tag, which several have been doing till now. Currently, there are eight varied varieties of Cardamom, Ginger, Pepper and Chilli that have got the GI status. Government soon to bring national policy on intellectual property rights

The Dollar Business Bureau To encourage innovation and entrepreneurship in the country, the government is in the process to bring in a national policy on intellectual property rights competent with the international trade norms. Commerce and Industry Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Monday said that a government-appointed think tank has already prepared the draft of the policy which has been sent to various ministries for consultation. After collecting feedback from all departments, the proposed policy will be sent to the cabinet. “After adopting a transparent process of drafting this policy, it is now being with the government for a month or two. India may not import more wheat due to high global prices

Source: PTI India is unlikely to import more wheat in the coming weeks due to surge in global prices and concerns that the government may anytime slap 10% duty on inbound shipments, traders said. Private flour millers had recently contracted 5 lakh tonnes of wheat from Australia for the first time in a decade due to sluggish supply of domestic high protein wheat and lower international prices. They had plans to contract another 5 lakh tonnes from France and Russia.
