The Dollar Business Bureau In order to stem the dumping of low-quality jute products i.e., jute yarn/twine (multiple folded/cabled and single), Hessian fabric, and jute sacking bags from Bangladesh and Nepal, the Ministry of commerce has investigated the and issued a notification imposing anti-dumping duties on Bangladesh and Nepal. The petition was filed by the Indian Jute Mills Association (IJMA) before the Directorate General of Anti-dumping and Allied duties (DGAD)against Bangladesh and Nepal. The notification dated 20th Oct 2016 states its observations after examining the contention of various interested parties under the following points: (i) There is dumping of product concerned from the subject countries. Dilution of jute packaging norms may fuel farm suicides
Source: PTI Expecting a bumper jute crop this season, the Jute Commissioner's (JC) office is all set to recommend to the Centre against dilution of mandatory jute packaging on fears that it may drive farmers to suicide. A meeting of the Standing Advisory Committee (SAC) of the Ministry of Textiles on July 15 is slated to discuss the procurement plan for the 2016-17 season. The JC forecasts jute production during the current season to be in excess of 90 lakh bales. The commissionerate officials feel that any dilution in mandatory packaging in food grains from the current 90 per cent would set back demand of jute bags, forcing mills to cut down production leading to large-scale unemployment, which could create a law and order situation as well. Government to ban firms supplying imported jute bags
Source: PTI The Ministry of Textiles (MoT) has warned that companies supplying imported jute bags for government procurements will be blacklisted for two years and will face criminal proceedings. The Jute Commissioner has said that even if a single jute bag being supplied to the government is found to be procured from abroad, action will be taken against owners and directors of the company, an official statement said today. The warning follows reports of unscrupulous traders and organisations importing B-Twill sacking and cloth from Bangladesh or Nepal and using them in government procurements.
