Customs imposes anti-dumping duty on jute from Nepal and Bangladesh
The Dollar Business Bureau The Government imposed definitive anti-dumping duty on imports of jute and jute products from Nepal and Bangladesh on Jan 5. In its notification no.01/2017-Customs (ADD) dtd Jan 5, 2017, the government details that anti-dumping duty ranging from $6.30 to $351.72 has been imposed on these products originating from Nepal and Bangladesh to protect the interests of the domestic manufacturers. The anti-dumping duty shall be effective for five years beginning from the date of publication of this notification and the duty shall be paid in Indian currency. Jute Smart is an online integrated portal to facilitate purchase of Jute bags from the Jute Industry by the State Procurement Agencies. Dilution of jute packaging norms may fuel farm suicides
Source: PTI Expecting a bumper jute crop this season, the Jute Commissioner's (JC) office is all set to recommend to the Centre against dilution of mandatory jute packaging on fears that it may drive farmers to suicide. A meeting of the Standing Advisory Committee (SAC) of the Ministry of Textiles on July 15 is slated to discuss the procurement plan for the 2016-17 season. The JC forecasts jute production during the current season to be in excess of 90 lakh bales. The commissionerate officials feel that any dilution in mandatory packaging in food grains from the current 90 per cent would set back demand of jute bags, forcing mills to cut down production leading to large-scale unemployment, which could create a law and order situation as well. States urged to order more jute sacking to boost demand

State Government representatives assured that they would sort out the issue in consultation with the jute industry. In addition to the above, Santosh Kumar Gangwar, Minister of State for Textiles (I/C), has taken several steps to strengthen the jute sector. As part of these steps, NJB (National Jute Board) will intensify development and promotion of diversified jute products.
