The Dollar Business Bureau Positive to set a record this year to procure around 60 lakh metric tonne (MT) of paddy, the government of Odisha said on Tuesday that the exercise for Rabi crop would begin from May 1. P K Mohapatra, Secretary, Food Supplies and Consumer Welfare said that the Odisha State Civil Supplies Corporation Ltd (OSCSC) would be going for the 2nd phase of procurement of Rabi paddy from May 1 to June 30. The Dollar Business Bureau In a bid to buffer stock of pulses, the Government of India has directed a further import of 80,000 MT masur and 90,000MT tur. The development was given a green signal during a meeting of Price Stabilization Fund, which reviewed the procurement and distribution of pulses from buffer stock. The meeting was chaired by Union Consumer Affairs Secretary Hem Pande. The government will be fetching the pulses via imports to the tune of 1, 81,000 MT, out of which 36,000 MT have already arrived. The domestic market and farmers have also contributed to the stock with 1,20,000 MT pulses. The Agriculture Minister was speaking at the India Maize Summit, organised by by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) and National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange (NCDEX) in New Delhi on Thursday. Over 308 maize hybrid varieties have been distributed in India after 1957. More than 30 hybrids and 10 mixed varieties have been issued during the previous five years. The Dollar Business Bureau With hopes of abundant rainfall after two straight years of drought, the Centre aims to reach a target of 270.10 million tonnes of food grain production in the Crop Year 2016-2017. The country had touched a new record with an output of 265.04 million tonnes in Crop year 2013-14. However, the output in Crop Year 2015 and 2016 plunged to 252.02 and 253.23 million tonnes, respectively. The reason behind the falling figures of output was the droughts witnessed in over ten states. Source: PTI In a bid to maintain discipline in paddy procurement and regulate the custom mills, the state government today decided to bring the Odisha Rice and Paddy Procurement and Custom Milling of Rice Order, 2016.  A proposal in this regard by the food supplies and consumer welfare department was approved at a cabinet meeting presided over by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik here. "This control order has several safeguards with respect to procurement of paddy, delivery of paddy for custom mills, direction for milling of paddy into rice, ensuring milling of paddy within the Kharif marketing season," Chief Secretary A P Padhi told reporters.
