The Dollar Business Bureau In order to simplify the laws governing the merchant shipping in the country, the Cabinet has given its nod for introducing the Merchant Shipping Bill, 2016, in the Parliament. “The Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved the Merchant Shipping Bill, 2016 for introducing it in the Parliament,” said an official release. The Bill is a revised version of the Merchant Shipping Act, 1958 and provides for repealing of the 1958 act along with the repealing of Coasting Vessels Act of 1838, the release said. New laws to revamp port sector, shipping industry

The Dollar Business Bureau    In an effort to revamp the shipping industry, the government is in the process of overhauling the existing laws related to ports and merchant shipping. Union Cabinet okays Ministry of Shipping's proposal for India's accession to Bunker Convention

Source: PIB, Government of India The Union Cabinet, chaired by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, today approved the Ministry of Shipping's proposal for India's accession to the International Convention on Civil Liability for Bunker Oil Pollution Damage, 2001 (Bunker Convention) of the International Maritime Organization [IMO]. Approval was also given to amend the Merchant Shipping Act, 1958 to give effect to the Bunker Convention, Nairobi Convention and Salvage Convention. The Bunker Convention ensures adequate, prompt, and effective compensation for damage caused by spills of oil, when carried as fuel in ships' bunkers.
