The Dollar Business Bureau The cargo traffic at country's major ports have witnessed a growth of 3.46% during April-November 2017 period, with the 12 top ports handling 439.66 million tonnes of cargo.  “Major ports in India have recorded a growth of 3.46% and together handled 439.66 million tonnes of cargo during the period April to November, 2017 as against 424.96 million tonnes handled during the corresponding period of previous year,” said a statement by the Ministry of Shipping on Thursday.  During the eight-month period, nine ports including Kolkata, Paradip, Chennai, Cochin, Visakhapatnam, Mumbai, New Mangalore, Kandla and JNPT have recorded a positive growth in cargo traffic. The Dollar Business Bureau The major Indian ports have witnessed a positive growth of 3.27% during first seven months of the current fiscal, with the highest growth recorded by Cochin Port at 17.66%. The Dollar Business Bureau Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), India’s biggest container port, recorded a rise of 5.11% in container traffic by handling 1.20 million TEUs, during the first three months of the current fiscal over the same period last year. “India’s largest container port, Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), registered a 5.11% growth in container traffic in the first quarter of the current financial year by handling 1.20 million TEUs as compared to 1.14 million TEUs in the corresponding quarter of the last financial year,” Ministry of Shipping said in a statement.  TEU or twenty-foot equivalent unit are used for measuring the cargo carrying capacity of a ship. The Dollar Business Bureau One of the top major ports in the country, the VO Chidambaranar (VOC) Port and Tamil Nadu’s Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation Limited (TANGEDCO) inked an agreement today to increase the capacities of two coal jetties at the port four-fold to 24 million tonnes for Rs 800 crore. The pact will upgrade two coal jetties at VOC Port - Jetty I and II -- from 6.25 MTPA (million tonne per annum) to 24 MTPA. The Dollar Business Bureau  According to information released by the Ministry of Shipping, the government-managed ports have outperformed the private ones with respect to growth in the volume of cargo handled during FY 2016-17. While the private ports registered a growth rate of 4%, the public ports grew by 6.79% annually, as against 4.32% in the previous year. Collectively, the twelve ports managed by the Ministry of Shipping handled 647.43 MT (million tonnes) of traffic during the year.  Individually, Kandla Port handled 105.44 Million Tonnes of cargo, securing the position of the largest volume handler and growing at 5.39%. Paradip Port stood second with 88.95 Million Tonnes of volume, registering a high growth rate of 16.45%. The Dollar Business Bureau  India and Bangladesh, as part of a regional cooperation initiative, signed a MoU on Aids to Navigation (AtoN). Under the agreement, India will advise Bangladesh on AtoN capacity building for the overall marine navigation development of the South Asian region.  International Maritime Organisation (IMO) requires nations all over the world to provide AtoN in their waters as per international norms and guidelines for the effective and safe navigation of vessel traffic.
