The Dollar Business Bureau In order to protect the interests of farmers, the Government on Thursday imposed an import duty of 30% on masoor (red lentil) and chana (chickpeas) to support domestic prices. Earlier, there was no import duty on these pulse varieties and these could be freely imported. “The Government has decided to impose 30% import duty on chana (chickpeas) and masoor (lentils), with immediate effect,” Ministry of Finance said in a statement. “Production of chana and masoor is expected to be high during the forthcoming Rabi season, and cheap imports, if allowed unabated, are likely to adversely affect the interest of the farmers,” it added. Govt lifts ban on export of all varieties of pulses
The Dollar Business Bureau In the wake of record production of pulses last year, the Government on Thursday removed restrictions on exports of all varieties of pulses so that farmers can get remunerative prices as rates in the domestic market have crashed below the minimum support price (MSP). “The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has given its approval for removal of prohibition on export of all types of pulses to ensure that farmers have greater choice in marketing their produce and in getting better remuneration for their produce,” said an official statement. Imports of pigeon peas restricted to 2 lakh MT per year
The Dollar Business Bureau India has imposed a cap on the imports of pigeon peas to 2 lakh MT per year. A government notification regarding the same was issued on August 5, 2017 via DGFT notification no.- 19/2015-2020. The domestic price of pigeon peas declined more than 60% due to bumper production in 2016-17. As per the Commodity Profile for Pulses- June 2017 given out by the Directorate of Economics and Statistics, production of pigeon peas (tur dal) was 4600 thousand tonnes in 2016-17 compared to 2560 thousand tonnes produced in 2015-16. Indias pulses imports stood at 27.48 lakh tonnes in Apr-Oct

Overall pulses imports by the government agencies and private sector stood at 27,48,473 tonnes, said C R Chaudhary, Minister of State for Food and Consumer Affairs, in a written response to the Lok Sabha on Wednesday. The country had imported 57.97 lakh tonnes of pulses in the last fiscal, as per the data provided by the minister. “The government has permitted to create up to 20 lakh tonnes of buffer stock of pulses through local procurement and imports,” Chaudhary said. Govt approves domestic procurement of 10 lakh tonnes of pulses

"Since the start of arrival of new crop in the market, the Government agencies have procured 3273.16 MT Moong as on Sept 19, 2016 benefiting 330 farmers," said the food ministry in a statement. Govt procures 1.11 L tonnes of pulses for buffer stock
The Dollar Business Bureau The government, so far, has acquired 1.11 lakh tonnes of pulses from farmers for the buffer stock. Meanwhile, in an effort to control the retail prices, the government has also agreed to import 38,500 tonnes of pulses. The states have been asked to place their requests for allotment of pulses from the buffer stock and sell them at prices not exceeding Rs.120 per kg. In the inter-ministerial committee meeting, headed by the Consumer Affairs Secretary Hem Pande, it was informed that of the 38,500 tonnes of contracted pulses, 13,000 tonnes already were brought into the country while 6,000 tonnes are in the process of being shipped.
