The Dollar Business Bureau Riding on a robust demand for its frozen shrimp and frozen fish in international markets, India exported 11,34,948 MT of seafood worth an all time high of $5.78 billion (Rs 37, 870.90 crore) in 2016-17 as against 9,45,892 tons and $4.69 billion dollars a year earlier, with USA and South East Asia continuing to be the major importers while the demand from the European Union (EU) grew substantially during the period. PTI  Odisha is eyeing five-fold growth in seafood exports to Rs 20,000 crore in the next five years and is looking to facilitate infrastructure development such as improvement in fishing harbors to meet the target. The Dollar Business Bureau India’s seafood exports fell in both value and volume terms during the 2015-16 fiscal, after registering a constant growth in the last seven financial years, Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA) announced on Friday. During the financial year 2015-16, seafood exports from India contracted 10% to 945,892 tonnes as against 1,051,243 tonnes in the fiscal 2014-15. The Dollar Business Bureau India could not encash 93 percent increase in availability of octopus in 2015-16, when compared to the previous year. This is mainly due to the sluggish demand in the European markets and stiff competition from the countries of South-East Asia. More than 11,409 tonnes of octopus were caught in Indian sea shores in 2015-16, as per the data from the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI). The domestic market for octopus is very less, and majority of its stock needs to be exported to other countries. Indian octopus’ exports account over Rs.200 crore in a year, mostly found in between August and November. India’s shrimp export to the United States for the January-March quarter have registered a 15.27 per cent increase to 24,188 tonnes over corresponding period last year’s 20,983 tonnes, aided by a weak rupee. While some sources on conditions of anonymity have indicated that the devaluation of the Indian rupee had helped push shrimp exports to the US last year, other sources said that falling shrimp production in major producing countries like Thailand and Vietnam is the primary reason for increase in the exports.
