The Dollar Business Bureau In a major recognition of efforts by India for benchmarking international spices trade, global standards setting body Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC) has accepted three Codex standards for white, green and black pepper, thyme and cumin, setting a course for universal agreement for identifying quality spices in different countries. Area under horticulture crops recording an increase of 1.9% over previous year
Sourced from Press Information Bureau The Department of Agriculture, Cooperation and Farmers Welfare has released the Second Advance Estimates of Area and Production of Horticulture Crops for 2016-17. These estimates are based on the information received from different State/UTs in the country. The production of horticulture crops in the country during 2016-17 is estimated to be more than 295 million tonnes which 3.2 % higher as compared to the previous year’s 2015-16 estimates. The area under horticulture crops has increased from 245 lakh ha to 249 lakh ha in 2016-17 recording an increase of 1.9% over previous year. Fruits production during the current year is estimated to be 93 million tonnes which 2.9% higher than the previous year. Spices exports grew 5% in volume terms during Apr-Dec 2016-17
The Dollar Business Bureau Supported by the huge shipments of cumin, mace, nutmeg and garlic, exports of spices from India recorded a 5% growth in volume in the first six months of the financial year 2016-17 and increased to Rs.8415.97 crore during the given period, witnessing a 7% increase in terms of value. The overall value of spices exports was Rs.7892.65 crore during the same period during the last financial year. Spices export surged to 4,37,360 tonnes during the period April-September 2016, against 4,14,780 tonnes in the corresponding period of FY 2015-16. “Chilli became the most exported spice for the April-September 2016 period with the shipment of 1,65,000 tonnes, fetching Rs.2307.75 crore,” according to a release by Spices Board on Wednesday. According to the annual data released by the Ministry of Commerce, six of the 11 key agricultural export products – tea, cereals, tobacco, spices, oil meals, and fruits and vegetables— recorded negative growth between April 2014 and March 2015. Of the six major items, oil meals witnessed the biggest fall of 52.73%, reducing the total exports value from US$ 2,796 million in 2013-14 to just US$ 1,321 million last year.
