TERI, 3WAYSTE, IFF sign MoU for waste management

In order to further encourage waste management capabilities of India, Delhi-based TERI (The Energy and Resources Institute), French waste management company the Innovative Finance Foundation (IFF) and Geneva-based innovation foundation 3WAYSTE signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on Monday to work together to unveil a breakthrough technology for civic solid waste management.
Coinciding with the Earth Day, the MoU was inked in the presence of Alexander Ziegler, the Ambassador of France to India.
The Ambassador detailed that a country trying to be sustainable and reducing the impact of humans on the environment are great challenges and added that India and France are committed to meet these challenges.
“We need political leadership, but also innovation, technologies and a strong involvement from the private sector and the civil society. I am delighted to support this fruitful Indo-French initiative,” he said.
He further said that there is a need to reduce the level of carbon emission globally and one of the ways is to combat solid waste.
Fabien Charreyre, President, 3WAYSTE said, “We are enthusiastic on entering India and the intent of this association is to transfer the technology to India.
A senior official from the French waste company said that the idea is to start some waste processing plants in India, possibly to open the first plant in Bengaluru.
“The cities of Kota and Pune have expressed their interest in establishing such plants,” he added.
TERI said that this technology has the capability to treat all the household waste, that includes unsegregated waste and converting over 90% of this waste into residue fuel to create clean energy, valuable raw materials and pure compost for agriculture.
“Waste segregation at source has been a major challenge since the passage of municipal solid waste management rules in 2000 and again in 2016, said Ajay Mathur, Director General, TERI.
“The process, which is introduced by TERI and 3WAYSTE has proposed to work on mixed waste whereas recovering 90% of the resources from such waste, that include resources for clean energy and pure compost for agriculture,” he added.
