Torrent to build another renewable energy plant in Gujarat

The power arm of Torrent Private Limited will be building three wind-energy projects at Kutch and Bhavnagar, Gujarat, producing 197.40 MW renewable energy collectively.

 Torrent Power, a subsidiary of $2.5 bn Torrent group, has expressed in a release with the BSE (Bombay Stock Exchange) that it would be developing a wind power system in Gujarat. The facility will produce 197.40 MW power from wind-energy across 3 locations in Gujarat- namely the districts of Bhavnagar and Kutch. The release also mentions that the power-system would be developed, and commissioned by March 2017, in partnership with a renowned Wind-Turbine Generator (WTG), but it does not reveal the identity of the partner. The power company has undertaken this project, to fulfill its renewable energy generation obligations. It has had considerable experience in executing renewable projects across multiple locations in Gujarat. Among the noteworthy projects are the wind-power projects in Rajkot, Charanka, & Surendranagar collectively producing 186.4 MW power, a 50 MW solar project at Jamnagar, and an 81 MW solar power project at Kamrej. Torrent’s repository of power generation has facilities producing energy from thermal, coal, as well as renewable energy such as wind, and solar. The company has gas and thermal based energy production facilities at Surat and Sabarmati. Apart from power, the group has interests in Pharmaceuticals, and cables. The power company with a turnover of close to Rs.16,000 crore is considered one of the largest private sector players in the country. It has a current installed generation capacity of 3202 MW and distributes close to 14.01 billion units to 2.95 million customers in cities across Gujarat, Maharashtra, and UP. Torrent has the least transmission and distribution losses (6.54%) in the country. Torrent is also credited for improving T&D losses at Bhiwandi, Maharashtra from 48% in 2007 to 19.33% within 2 years. Among notable highlights in the company’s history are the acquisition of government held thermal units such as Surat Electricity Company and Ahmedabad Electricity Company. The company also managed to sign strategic franchisee and distribution agreements with Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Limited (MESDCL), Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation, and Dakhsinanchal Vidyut Vitran Nigam Limited (DVVNL-Agra).
