US President Donald Trump said that US’s ties with Russia may be at “an all-time low.” But he also said that it would be wonderful if NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organisation) and America could get along with Russia.

“It would be wonderful as we were discussing just a little while ago, if NATO and our country could get along with Russia. Right now we're not getting along with Russia at all. We may be at an all-time low in terms of relationship with Russia,” the US President told reporters at a joint news conference at White House with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.

Trump’s remarks came after a two-hour meeting between Rex Tillerson, US Secretary of State and Russian President Vladimir Putin, in Moscow.

He said that he will speak with Tillerson in a little while and hoped that they have very successful discussion.

“We will see the final outcome that will be perhaps in a long time period. However, the end result is important, not only talks. Based on everything, I think that things went quite well, may be lot better than expected,” Trump said.

The US President said he hoped that European nations would have nothing to worry about from Russia. Though there are some problems right now.

Speaking to the journalists, Stoltenberg said that NATO and its members have to find ways to have a dialogue with Russia.

“We believe that the precondition for a political dialogue with Russia is that we are strong and that we are united. That based on that, we can talk to Russia because Russia is our neighbour. Russia is here to stay. So we have to find ways to manage our relationship with Russia,” he said.

Stoltenberg said he is certain that this approach has been supported by the US, partly because the nation contributes with the forces to our increased presence in eastern part of alliance, as well as in southeast of alliance in Romania.

“And the President and the US has expressed clearly that they want to have a dialogue with Russia, but based on strength and unity in the alliance,” he added.
