Yamaha Motor establishes 2nd R&D centre in India

The purpose of the new R&D centre is to create models for India and also for the global market.

Yamaha Motor Research & Development India Pvt Ltd (YMRI), a 100 percent subsidiary of Japan’s Yamaha Motor Co., has established its second Research & Development (R&D) centre in India with Rs.66 crore investment. The centre is established with an aim to develop models for local as well as global markets. 

“An investment of Rs.66 crore has been made to set up the center and it is part of the Rs.1,500 crore investment that Yamaha has already committed to 'Make in India' by 2018,” the company said in a statement on Tuesday. 

The new centre is situated in the premises of India Yamaha Motor Ltd’s (IYM) facility in the district of Kanchipuram near Tamil Nadu. It has been set up to ensure maximum utilisation of resources and to focus on improving the capacity and capability.

The first R&D centre in India is situated in Surajpur, Uttar Pradesh. “The purpose of the new R&D centre is to create models for India and also for global market,” said Yasuo Ishihara, MD, YMRI. “The centre at Chennai will be the second major pillar for YMRI,” he added.

Ishihara further said that by collaborating with the existing development power at the Surajpur centre, we are aiming for more cost reduction and developing attractive products at the Chennai centre.

“The major role of India Integrated Development Center is the development of enhanced specifications for the market in India,” he added.

YMRI has been created by Yamaha Motor Co., of Japan to offer R&D and product development services to its subsidiary, India Yamaha Motor (IYM), for both its local and export markets. This is the fifth R&D headquarter overseas for the Yamaha Motor Group, apart from its centres in China Italy, Thailand and Taiwan.
