CIL aims to produce 1bn tonne of coal: Goyal

The level of power shortage in the country came down to 2.1% from the previous 4.2%.

Coal India Ltd has set a target to produce one billion tonnes of coal, said Union Minister of State, independent charge for Coal and Power, Piyush Goyal, on Wednesday. The target before the Ministry of Coal and CIL to attain one billion of output is very much challenging, he said. Goyal was addressing the media at the Korba district headquarters in Chhattisgarh, when he stated that the level of power shortage in the country came down to 2.1% from the previous 4.2%.

He also participated in a series of programmes held in Korba as a part of Vikas Parv, which was a month-long event marked to celebrate two years of successful completion of Prime Minister Narendra Modi led government. Korba, is the power hub of Chhattisgarh and houses over ten thermal power plants.

Briefing the media at Gevra about the achievements of the NDA government’s rule, Goyal, announced that a medical institute will be established in the state by CIL. The medical college will benefit the students in the state, he said. In addition, a cultural building will also be constructed in South Eastern Coalfield Limited mining zone. The cultural building will be open to weaker sections of the society for free and promised that other pending construction works will be implemented soon.

Goyal also held a meeting with representatives and officials from labour union.

The minister along with Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Dr. Raman Singh also initiated a high-level discussion over the railway connectivity during the meeting in Korba. A comprehensive presentation on coal blocks and rail corridors was also a part of the meeting. With Centre’s assistance, a 270-km long railway link connecting Khairagarh, Dongargarh, Kawardha, Kota, Katghora and Mungeli to Bilaspur will be laid soon, revealed a government source.
