Food items to have key info on 40% pkt area
The Government of India has made amendments in the packaged food commodities rules and insists that food manufacturing units should prominently display six key details, including retail price and quantity, on at least 40% of the area on the packet.
According to an official release, the norms for packaged products have been revised by the Consumer Affairs Ministry. The new norms will be put into effect from July this year.
Ram Vilas Paswan, Union Minister for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution has given directions to the officials in the Ministry to make sure that the amended norms are positively put into effect from July.
In a meeting of the Bureau of Indian Standards’ (BIS) governing body on Friday at Mussoorie, the Minister had a detailed discussion on the issue and informed that a monitoring cell will be created to make sure that the new norms will be strictly complied with.
The Minister said the government is creating a response system that would quickly look into the complaints of consumers. The National Consumer Helpline is being roped in for this purpose and now an officer of a senior cadre will observe the complaints on a day-to-day basis.
As per the new norms, the key six details that should have to be displayed on a packet are: the name of the manufacturer, the importer, packager; product’s net quantity; date of manufacturing; retail price; and, contacts of consumer care. The details should be displayed prominently occupying at least 40 percent area of the packet, in a readable font size, leaving the top and bottom spaces.
