JNPT extends rebate on containers ferried via rail
The waiver of Rs. 728 per container will be implemented till April 15 on containers ferried by railways to and from the dedicated rakes at JNPCT.
The move will encourage the trade for usage of rail transportation and reduce the congestion and pollution on the roads around JN Port.In a move to encourage the use of rail transportation within the country, the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust Board has decided to waive of handling charges for containers sent to the port via railways for exim (export-import) trade.
The waiver of Rs. 728 per container will be implemented till April 15 on containers ferried by railways to and from the container freight services on dedicated rakes at JNPCT (Jawaharlal Nehru Port Container Terminal).
In October last year, the waiver was granted for a period of three months on a trial basis. “To further encourage rail movement, the Board has extended the rebate for another three months,” the Ministry of Shipping said in a statement on Monday.
Earlier, the rebate was applicable to containers moved by dedicated rakes both ways. But now, it will also apply to containers that have either arrived through dedicated rakes or moved out through dedicated rakes placed on JNPCT lines.
“This will not only encourage the trade for usage of rail transportation but also reduce the congestion and pollution on the roads around JN Port,” the statement said.
In order to minimise transportation cost on goods, the government has been focusing on the use of rail and waterways. This will also improve competitiveness of Indian exporters in the global market.
