Chinese electronics major Lenovo on Tuesday said it is planning to make India a potential centre for manufacturing laptops.

"The Pondicherry plant, where we are already manufacturing desktops, has the capacity and flexibility to manufacture laptops (notebooks). The company will have to take a call when to do it," said Dinesh Nair, director, consumer business, Lenovo India.

According to Nair, the company is committed to the PM’s Make in India initiative. Last year, Lenovo CEO and Chairman Yang Yuanqing held a meeting with Modi and conveyed his company’s commitment towards the initiative.

Lenovo has already started manufacturing at its Chennai plant. The company is now the third largest vendor of PC’s in the Indian market in terms of market share. It has redesigned its entire product portfolio to target the country’s youth and the business segments while keeping the price at competitive rates.

Lenovo’s manufacturing laptops in India would give it more flexibility since it needs at least two months to ship products from China.

At present, the entire range of laptops is shipped from China.

The company’s laptops segment contributes about 85 – 88% to its revenue, while the rest is from desktops.
