To ensure smooth movement of vehicles, APM Terminals Mumbai at the Jawaharlal Nehru Port (JNP) has opened a new parking facility which will provide easy access for tractor trailers carrying export cargoes. The new facility is exclusively for handling of factory-stuffed export containers arriving via road, bound for outgoing vessel calls at the terminal. In view of the fact that “factory-stuffed cargo covers 70% of the gate movements at APM Terminals”, JNP authorities reserved the parking space to streamline access for port users and to alleviate local traffic congestion at the terminal. As the terminal witnesses almost half of JNP’s overall traffic volume, congestion due to illegal parking by unauthorized truckers often becomes a serious challenge at the port. “The dedicated parking facility is the best way forward while operating along the limited road infrastructure leading to the port,” said APM Terminals Mumbai CEO Pradip Agrawal.  Ravi Gaitonde, COO, APM Terminals Mumbai, opined, “Parking facility will address the issue of nearly two-thirds of the road capacity being regularly obstructed due to the illegal parking. It will help enhance road connectivity and ensure smooth and safe traffic flows.” Now, the tractor-trailer drivers will be able to park their trucks at the facility for a nominal sum, charged by a third-party contractor managing the facility, and upon completion of all documentation and other standard verifications, will be allowed to proceed to the terminal gates. The new dedicated parking facility plans to open and operate a 24-hour paramedic center to provide free diagnosis and basic medical aid to the drivers. APM Terminals Mumbai established a new Indian National Maritime Record by handling more than 2 million Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit (TEU)s in FY2014-15, which represents approximately 20% of India’s total containerized throughput volume.
