Import of generic drugs by poor countries receives nod from WTO

The Dollar Business Bureau World Trade Organisation (WTO) has finalised a deal that allows poor countries, which do not have manufacturing infrastructure for the production of generic drugs, to import the same. The proposal has been awaiting approval since 2005. It finally got ratified by two-thirds majority on 23 January, 2017. "The amendment to the Trade Related Aspects of Intellectual Property (TRIPS) agreement gives the world's most vulnerable people access to drugs for diseases such as HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria," WTO Director General Roberto Azevedo said. Countries are permitted to produce generic versions of patented drugs for their domestic markets since the beginning of WTO regime in 1995. India wary of EU seizing Indian drugs

India EU summit in first half of 2016: EU

Newly-appointed ambassador of European Union Tomasz Kozlowski said the issue of European Union restricting sale of around 700 generic drugs clinically tested by India's GVK Biosciences does not stand anymore and both are now set to open a “new page” in their ties. Generic drug market to cross $27.9 billion by 2020: study

The Dollar Business Bureau India’s generic drug market is expected to cross $27.9 billion and would account for 85% share in the domestic drug market by 2020, according to a study undertaken by ASSOCHAM and RNCOS. The current generic market size is $13.1 billion and is growing at a CAGR of about 16.3%, primarily due to approval granted by the USFDA makers and 21 drugs patent losing licenses by 2019, the study said. “Generic drugs account for 75% of the domestic pharmaceutical market by value. Drugs for cholesterol control, pain management, anticoagulant, respiratory, liver disorders, depression and lipid regulators are highly prevalent in the global market,” said the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM) and RNCOS.
