PTI  Softdrinks majors PepsiCo and Coca Cola were today restrained by officials from drawing water from Tamirabharani River in the district till April 30 for their bottling plants in view of the acute water shortage. The water level in the Papanasam and Manimutharu dams across the river was enough only to meet drinking water requirements, District Collector M Karunakaran said in a release. The suspension was ordered even as a PIL seeking a stay on drawing of water by the two companies from the river was filed last year before Madras High Court Bench in Madurai. A division bench led by Justice T S Sivagnanam ordered the government to file its counter and posted the case for hearing on April 27. ...

MoU between EU and India on water cooperation gets go-ahead

The Dollar Business Bureau The Union Cabinet under the Chairmanship of the PM has given its approval for an MoU between India and EU in the field of water resources. The MoU envisages strengthening the technological, scientific and management capabilities of India and the European Union in the field of water management on the basis of equality, reciprocity and mutual benefit. It provides technical exchange on water issues, including on integrated water resource management plans within river basins and through study visits. L&T bags $161mn worth metro project in Saudi Arabia

The Dollar Business Bureau India’s construction giant Larsen & Toubro on Tuesday said that it has won a railway contract worth $161.37 million (Rs.1070 crore) in Saudi Arabia. As part of the project, L&T will build 62.86 kms of double ballastless tracks under tunnel in Riyadh—the capital city of Saudi Arabia. The project is expected to be completed within 40 months. “The order has been won against stiff international competition and is in sync with L&T’s strategy to expand their railway business into the Middle-East,” the company said in a statement. The 75-year-old multinational company has won the order from BACS association (Bachtel-Almabani-CCC-Siemens) to design and build ballastless tracks for Riyadh Metro Lines -1&2.
