With Conservative party’s move ensuring a female lead to replace Prime Minister David Cameron, two women will battle it out to be the next PM of UK.

Since Margaret Thatcher, the first female PM of UK, stepped down 26 years ago, Conservative party’s move will give way to the second female PM.

The governing party chose two candidates, Theresa May and Andrea Leadsom to contest the battle to be held in September. May is the home secretary and Leadsom is junior minister of energy.

Either of the two women will replace Cameron, who stepped down as Britons chose to ‘Leave’ European Union. UK is grappling with the consequences and planning for future of economy as it stunned the world with its decision to exit from EU.

However, the decision was opposed by Cameron resulting in his announcement to step down immediately after the party elects a successor.

May has supported to ‘Remain’ with EU. However, she said that she respects the outcome of referendum and seeks for the best deal for Britain as the negotiations to exit from the 28-member-nation bloc are likely to happen in the next two years.

Leadsome has been supporting to ‘leave’ from EU. She stated that she will focus on the success of UK, which has been hit by Brexit with fears of high budget deficit. Trade must be top most priority and free trade with EU should continue, she added.

May had an upper hand in the first stage of selections, which was done via voting by 330 party members of House of Commons.  On Thursday, May garnered 199 votes while Leadsome secured 84 and Micheal Gove, who has since been eliminated, secured 46 votes.

The second round will be executed and judged by different constituencies registered party members. The conservative party did not disclose the number of registered voters. However, the House of Commons Library stated that the latest figure of registered voters is around 149,800. The winner of the second round will take charge as the PM and party leader and will be announced on September 9.
