Government imposes anti-dumping duty on electronic calculators, spares Casio

The duty ranges between USD 0.79 to USD 1.22 on cheap Chinese electronic calculators.

 The Dollar Business Bureau Casio_650 The government, today, imposed an anti-dumping duty on imports of electronic calculator originating from China. However, the ruling excludes electronic calculators of the Chinese manufacturer Casio and some other types such as printing calculators, graphing calculators and programming calculators. The Ministry of Finance imposed the duty on Director General of Anti-Dumping Duties and Allied Duties (DGAD) recommendation. As per the authority’s final findings of the investigation, it said, the domestic industry has suffered injury due to dumped imports of Chinese electronic goods. Hence to ‘remove the injury’ DGAD has recommended an anti-dumping duty on the product. The duty ranges between USD 0.79 to USD 1.22 and will be effective for five years. As per the Ministry of Commerce, in FY2008-09 India imported electronic calculators USD 18.87 million from China which grew by USD 10 million to USD 28.04 million in FY2013-14. China is top and the largest exporter of electronic calculators to India. Calculators imports from Vietnam may surge, as it’s the second but a relatively a small market. Moreover the price of the Casio’s calculator, which ranges between Rs 90-400 in India, would see a rise between 20-30%. Anti-dumping on Chinese calculators will also give a boost to domestic industry. The probe was initiated over a complaint filed by Ajanta Pvt Ltd on behalf of the local industry.
