India’s rank in the
global innovation index went up by 15 positions making it the 66th most innovative country in the world.
China, too, registered an improvement in its ranking and joined the club of the 25 top innovative countries in the world.
The Gobal Innovation Index, based on 82 variables in seven areas, and grouped into two sections — inputs and outputs for innovation, is essentially a resource for the global policy makers to address key challenges in innovation.
Paris-based Insead Business School, Cornell University and the UN’s World Intellectual Property Organisation jointly create and report The Global Innovation Index each year.
Some of the key
domestic issues such as poor
infrastructure, lack on focus on quality education and intellectual property have been posited as the possible factors for dragging India’s innovation.
The index, however, underlined that India has a unique ability to create a bright spot in innovation, based on its domestic market requirements and cultural advantages.
It also asserted that India needs to encourage innovation in the areas of digital consumption, energy, food security, healthcare, transport and water, while strengthening its talent pool and leveraging global talent in these market-pull zones.
