Govt considering anti-dumping probe against Chinese radial tyres
The government is examining the anti-dumping and anti-subsidy duty investigations on imports of bus and truck radial tyres from China to protect domestic manufacturers. “Directorate General of Anti‐Dumping and Allied Duties (DGAD) is examining petitions for initiation of anti‐dumping and anti‐subsidy duty investigations on imports of bus and truck radial tyres from China,” Commerce and Industry Minister Nirmala Sitharaman told Lok Sabha in response to a query. Earlier, India’s Automotive Tyre Manufacturers Association (ATMA) had requested the government to restrict imports of truck/bus radial tyres and import of tyres without BIS marking from China. The industry body had also urged the government to start investigation on dumping of tyres from China and increase customs duty on the product. The government has already restricted the imports of retreated tyres unless it fulfills the Minimum Import Price (MIP) criterion. It has also instructed the customs department to enforce pneumatic tyres & tubes for automotive vehicles (quality control) order and to restrict import of tyres without BIS (Bureau of Indian Standard) marking. India’s import of high-capacity radial tyres meant for trucks and buses from China has skyrocketed during the current financial year. Chinese tyres cost about 25% less than Indian products. The devaluation of yuan has increased the risk of dumping of tyres from Chinese suppliers. At present, the import of tyres is subjected to pneumatic tyres and tubes for automotive vehicles (quality control) order, 2009 and BIS standards.
