Mercedes recalls 1 mn cars worldwide due to a starter problem

Global auto major Mercedes is recalling around one million cars and SUVs from all over the world due to a starter part, which can overheat and may cause fire.
The recall includes certain E-Class, C-Class and CLA cars and GLC and GLA SUVs, from the year 2015 to 2017. Out of a million vehicles to be recalled by the company, around 308,000 cars are from the US only.
The Germany-based automobile manufacturer reported 51 fires all over the world, with around 30 in the US. The automaker has not reported any injuries or death due to the problem.
The US is one of the three largest markets for Mercedes, followed by China and Germany.
According to the documents released by the US government on Friday, Mercedes said that if for any reason the transmission and engine wouldn’t turn over, a current limiting part in the starter motor can be overheated from repeated efforts for starting the vehicles. This can result in the overheating of current limiter and can melt nearby parts.
Mercedes started investigating the issue in June 2016 after receiving field reports that current limiters are ‘thermally damaged’.
Owners of the vehicles in the US will be informed in late March and again in July when the parts for replacement are available. It will just take an hour for dealers to replace the fuse in order to prevent the problem. The repairing cost will be free of charge.
