Vardhan inaugurates world-class CGMP facility in Jammu

A newly built, state-of-the-art Plant for extraction, formulation, packaging of medicinal plant based phyto-pharmaceutical drugs under internationally accepted GMP guidelines was inaugurated by the Union Minister for Science & Technology and Earth Sciences, Harsh Vardhan and Minister of State for DoNER (Independent Charge), Jitendra Singh, at CSIR-IIIM, in Jammu on 20th October, 2016.
The facility is the first Current Good Manufacturing Practices (CGMP) in India, set up in the public sector. The Drug & Food Control Organisation, Jammu & Kashmir has issued a manufacturing license to the facility, the news release said.
This facility will help all the CSIR institutes involved in the discovery and development of drugs to convert their natural product leads to pre-clinical and clinical development for approvals for marketing.
In addition, the plant will offer opportunity to entrepreneurs and SMEs who are engaged in manufacturing standardised extracts, natural products, botanical drug formulations, etc, to assess their research leads and turn into entrepreneurs. This will help in setting up more number of industries and in generating employment, the release said.
The facility will also be utilised as Technology Business Incubator (TBI), and for that the Department of Science and Technology has already given its approval. This will also be utilised for conducting certified training programs for students and entrepreneurs, it added.
